Centenary Celebrations of Sri Sringeri Shankara Math, Bangalore

A message from the Administrator, Sri Sringeri Math

Sri Shankara Bhagavathpadacharya, incarnation of Lord Paramashiva, took birth at Kalady in Kerala 1200 years back to revive Sanatana Dharma. He preached the Advaita Philosophy touring all over the country and established four Amnaya Peethams in four corners of India. Among these, the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham established at Sringeri has been adorned with an unbroken succession of illustrious Gurus right from Sri Sureshwaracharya to this day. The present Jagadguru, His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal, the 36th in the Guru Parampara, is a tapasvin of the highest order and is known for His great spiritual eminence and scholarship. He is a shining example of love and compassion.

Sri Sri Jagadguru Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswamigal, the 33rd Pontiff of the Peetham, who is also referred to as Abhinava Shankara, blessed the devotees to start a branch of Sri Sringeri Math at Bangalore in the year 1907. Started with the support of the then rulers and the Diwan of Mysore, Sri Sringeri Math at Shankarapuram, Bangalore has been a centre of spiritual, religious and educational activities for one hundred years. The spacious campus housing the first temple for Adi Shankara anywhere outside Sringeri is standing as a monument of our ancient wisdom and culture.

As per the direction of His Holiness, it has been decided to celebrate the centenary of Sri Sringeri Shankara Math, Bangalore in a grand manner. Arrangements are in full swing for the celebrations in April-May, 2007 and many events are to take place in the presence of the Jagadguru including:

  • Just as in this body, the embodied one passes through boyhood, youth, and old age, so does one pass into another body. With reference to this (birth, aging and death), the wise man is not disturbed. Bhagavan Sri Krishna on Significance of God
  • An object continues to be dear as long as one derives pleasure from it and it is detested for the duration that it causes pain. The same object cannot be always liked or disliked. Sometimes, that which is not dear may become dear. Moreover, that which was loveable can turn unpleasant. The Atma, towards which affection never wanes, is always the most beloved. Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada on Shatashloki
  • Blessings are the monopoly of God and we must all pray for his gracious blessings. Jagadguru Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal on Significance of God
  • It is pitiful that when many of us are asked, “who are you?”, The first thought that arises is “I am a Keralite”, or “I am a Punjabi”, etc. The thought that should immediately stem is “I am an Indian”. If people first feel that they are Indians and only then think of divisions, the nation will have great prosperity and the divisive forces will not be operative as they are today. Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamigal on Significance of God
  • Instead of using the tongue for speaking futile issues, use it to chant the names of God. God shall then guide you along the right and beneficial path. Jagadguru Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal on Significance of God's Names
