History

Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimhabharati Mahaswamiji, the 33rd Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham graced the city of Bengaluru, known in ancient times as Kalyana Nagari in 1907. During his stay in the city, the residents requested the Jagadguru Mahaswamiji to bless the city with a Shankara Math. With the support of the then Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, Diwan of Mysore Sri V. P. Madhava Rao and other noble philanthropic people, a Shankara Math was established in the city in an area now known as Shankara Puram in Basavanagudi. A temple of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya was consecrated with a marble murti in the Garbhagriha. From then onwards the Math became a place of pilgrimage for devotees.

In 1939, the 34th Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji consecrated the idol of Sri Sharadamba.

In 1968, the 35th Jagadguru Shankaracharya Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji had the beautiful gopuras for both these temples built and performed the kumbabhishekha.

In 2007 the 36th and present Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Sri Bharati
Tirtha Mahaswamiji performed the splendid centenary celebrations of the Math under the leadership of the administrator, Padmasri Dr. V R. Gowrishankar.
